At its core, this is a novel about music: as a form of social control, as a vehicle for self-expression, as a channel of communication, and as a powerful tool for healing. Its protagonist is Anthem, an eighteen-year-old boy who has been genetically programmed by the Corp as a conduit, providing energy to something known as the Grid. In Anthem’s world, music has been digitally enhanced to act like a mind-altering drug, with illegal underground bands the only form of resistance. When a member of Anthem’s band dies from listening to the Corp’s music, Anthem knows he must use his music, untainted by the Corp’s mind-control substances, to fight back.

This fast-paced, action-packed story is the first in a two book series. Its atmosphere and intensity, as well as its genuinely likable characters, make Coda sing. Bittersweet and at times quite dark, this is a novel written in a lyrical style that echoes the rhythms of music itself.
