Love in the Time of
Global Warming, Henry Holt and Co., 2013.
This is an eco fairy-tale, set in post-apocalyptic,
earthquake-ravaged Los Angeles. Loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey, it tells the
story of Penelope, a teenager on the hunt for her lost family. Poetic and
surreal, the story takes on a dream-like quality as Penelope journeys across
the wastelands, fighting genetically engineered giants and making allies along
the way.
A mash-up of science fiction, magical realism, mythology,
and post-apocalyptic fiction, this is a book that shouldn’t work, but does. Realistic,
well-realised characters, including a bisexual heroine trying to find her place
in the world, make this a mandatory addition to any YA LGBT booklist.
