15-year-old Kivali, left on a step as a baby
with nothing but a t-shirt with a lizard on it as her inheritance, was born a
boy, but feels like a girl. Taken in by artsy, alternative Sheila, she lives
out her life in relative peace, until one day she is sent to Crop Camp, a labour
camp for teenagers. All is not what it seems at Crop Camp, especially when
teenagers begin to disappear. Can Kivali unravel the mystery before it’s too
late?
Lizard Radio is one of a very small
number of young adult novels starring a transgender protagonist. Sophisticated
and thought provoking, it handles Kivali’s story with sensitivity and compassion.
The writing style is lyrical and spare, bringing this fast-paced, suspenseful
story to life. An intriguing read.
